FRIENDS OF THE HUACHUCA MOUNTAINS Sunday Afternoon Programs for August 7 to October 30, 2022 Carr House Information Center 1:30 PM 1011 Carr Canyon Road, Hereford, AZ Programs are FREE and open to the public. August 7, Mike Foster, The Pilgrimage to Magdalena de Kino The Fiestas of San Francisco Xavier in Magdalena de Kino Sonora is a huge event attended by many thousands of indigenous pilgrims and other Sonoran and Arizonans in early October each year. Mike Foster will present a video of the sights and sounds at the several day fiesta and discuss some of the beliefs of the Tohono O'odham, Mayo, Yaqui people. August 21, Steve Merkley, Beavers on the San Pedro The American beaver was driven to extinction in the San Pedro River by the 1920's. Between 1999 and 2002, 15 beavers were reintroduced to the river. Dr. Steve Merkley will discuss the current trends of this lovable creature. Sept 4, Jeff Babson, The Monarch The Story of an Icon Monarchs are the most familiar insects in the world, an orange and black icon that is the symbol of insect conservation. This presentation explores the biology of Monarchs - their identification, classification, migration, biology, and conservation. Sept. 18, Emily Burns, Wildlife Species of the Southern Huachuca Mountains Emily Burns from Sky Island Alliance will describe the wildlife community as documented by their array of 70+ wildlife cameras spanning 30 miles of the border since March 2020. Also learn about how to contribute wildlife data from your own backyard camera to help monitor species locally through Sky Island FotoFauna. October 2, Ted Forte, Observing our Moon Our moon is the easiest object to observe in our sky. In this talk we'll discover what is visible on its surface and how best to observe it. Oct. 16, Carl Olson, The Amazing world of Arthropods Let's take a journey first through some of the wows of our Sonoran Desert, and then do some comparisons of amazing insects and some of their arthropod relatives from around the world. This whole journey hopefully will enlighten the audience to the grandeur and wonder of this world of small animals and how incredibly important they are to all ecosystems. Oct. 30, Mike Foster, Dia de los Muertos Celebration Mike Foster, Videographer and Carr House Host, will show how the Aztec/Catholic holiday is celebrated in cemeteries just across the international border and more extended places in Mexico. Learn more about this holiday through traditional breads and beverages with accompanying videos and discuss.
