A Look Back at the History of Toyota

Toyota is a major auto maker known for producing exceptionally reliable and durable vehicles. Many people who drive a Toyota remain loyal to the brand because the vehicles are efficient, comfortable, and safe, with all the amenities that modern car buyers have come to expect from late model vehicles. If you’re in the market for a new Toyota, you might be interested in taking a look back at the history of this iconic car brand.

Toyota’s Early Beginnings

It might surprise you to learn that Toyota actually has roots in the textile business. It began as a division of Toyoda Automatic Loom Works. In 1929, the son of the founder of this company, Kiichiro Toyoda, was sent to the U.S. to explore the possibility of expanding into the automobile business. This was done at the directive of the Japanese government, which needed an edge during the Second Sino-Japanese War with China. In 1930, Toyoda began investigating gas-powered engines. By 1935, the company had produced its first Model A1 passenger car, which was quickly followed by its first truck. After these successful prototypes were built, production on the passenger car began in 1936.

Toyota’s Growing Pains

Like many companies, Toyota hit a stumbling block after World War II. In fact, the company came close to bankruptcy. However, the leadership was able to obtain a loan that provided the much-needed infusion of cash. Toyota continued to experience growing pains throughout much of the 1950s. However, once the Korean War broke out, the U.S. military ordered thousands of vehicles from Toyota, which revived the company.

Toyota’s International Expansion

Toyota first established itself in the U.S. on Halloween in 1957. Its headquarters was in Hollywood, CA. At this time, the company focused on producing its new model, the Toyopet Crown sedan. Although the Toyopet was durable, reliable, and roomy, Americans felt it didn’t have enough power. This opened the door for the development of the all-terrain Land Cruiser, which became the widely hailed signature car for the brand until the Toyota Corona debuted in 1965.
